The
North Police Department strives to promote open dialogue between the
police and the public. The Department has established guidelines to
regulate conduct of officers, to address public concerns and to increase
awareness about the role of the police and the impact to both police
and the public. One measure is to establish ties in neighborhoods through
the use of community-oriented policing. Secondly, the Department works
to form and build positive relationships with the community in an effort
to combat crime. This is accomplished by training officers about such
topics as cultural diversity. Officers are required to receive initial
and continuing training related to cultural diversity and interpersonal
communication skills. The North Police Department believes that effective
relationships must contain a mutual understanding of various cultures,
beliefs and backgrounds. In addition to understanding cultural diversity,
the North Police Department has strict policies prohibiting biased-based
policing. The Department has adopted a concept and policy to deter profiling
individuals based solely on ethnicity or based on common traits of a
particular group of persons. |
